by writers, for business leaders
For the past decade, we've worked as storytellers.
We both started as journalists covering the latest developments in business for outlets like the New York Times, Morning Brew, Vanity Fair and Business Insider. We've both also worked in marketing and advertising, helping brands 1) define their unique narrative and then 2) execute it. We've delivered results across various communications remits, from establishing brand guidelines for emerging media outlets to single-handedly architecting marketing operations for venture capital firms.
At 18 Olives, we bring all that expertise together. We’re a one-stop shop for busy operators who need communications support.
What we do
-
Email newsletters can be an exceptionally effective way to communicate with your intended audience — that is, if they’re executed with thoughtful, tailored content and strategy. We can help you craft an approach that’s right for your brand, your goals, and your bottom line.
-
Good content excites customers, investors and your team. We’ll help you build and execute your messaging, content strategy, and content creation processes. This can include but isn’t limited to: content audits, competitor research, SEO strategy, editorial planning, bylines, thought leadership, manifestos, website copy, content management, and distribution and promotion plans.
-
Whether you’re a large financial institution or a scrappy startup, we’ll create ad copy that’s aligned with both your unique brand voice and your awareness and/or acquisition needs.
-
Do you manage writers who could stand to brush up on the foundations of business writing? Do you work with founders who are ready for media training? We can help – and our workshops can be scaled up or down for different audiences. We teach the basics and specifics of business writing, and can educate founders and entrepreneurs on the ins and outs of media relations.
About us
On an extraordinarily muggy July day in 2023, Maya was laid off from her job at a venture capital firm. In the days that followed, she mused about her next steps in a newsletter…and in response got an email from a reader named Eliza, whom Maya had never met, who had a unique proposal. Would Maya be interested in talking about starting a consultancy together?
One coffee date – they happened to live in the same Brooklyn neighborhood – and many conversations via Google Doc later, 18 Olives was born.
-
Eliza started in nonprofit communications in Denver, Colorado before a stint in local journalism, then moved to New York City to earn her M.S. in Journalism from Columbia. After graduating with honors, she put her editorial skills to work for newsletter juggernaut Morning Brew during a period when the email-first digital media startup grew from 1 to 3 million subscribers. Most recently, she generated exceptionally high-performing ad copy for digital media partners spanning finance, consumer brands, and B2B. She specializes in newsletter content and digital ad copy, with a particular emphasis on financial institutions.
-
Maya started her career as a journalist, covering venture capital and startups at Business Insider. She then launched The Hive at Vanity Fair, where she was a tech reporter, and worked on news products at The New York Times. At Codeword, an integrated marketing agency, she worked on major internal communications projects for Google, privacy messaging for YouTube, thought leadership for startups, and media training sessions for founders. She specializes in content strategy and media relations, with an emphasis on taking early-stage organizations from zero to one on their comms and content marketing journeys.
